8 Things to Look Out for When Choosing a Preschool

Choosing a preschool can feel overwhelming. Everyone says they’re play-based, child-centred, and nurturing — but what does that actually look like on a normal Tuesday morning? Here are 8 things worth asking (and watching for) when choosing a preschool for your child.

1. Do the children look happy… or just well-behaved?

There’s a difference.

Happy children talk, laugh, ask questions, and sometimes get a little messy.

If every child looks silent and stiff, ask yourself — are they learning, or just complying?

Look for joy, curiosity, and confidence — not perfection.

2. How do teachers speak to children when things go wrong?

Anyone can be warm when things go right.

Watch closely when a child spills something, makes a mistake, or disagrees with a friend.

Do teachers guide calmly and respectfully?

Or do they rush to scold, shame, or “fix” quickly?

This is where values like patience, kindness, and forgiveness are actually taught.

3. Is learning active… or mostly on worksheets?

Worksheets look impressive.

But young children learn best when they touch, move, build, talk, and explore.

Ask:

• How do children learn to read?

• How do they develop thinking skills?

• How much of the day is hands-on?

Real learning is noisy, interactive, and joyful.

4. Are children encouraged to think — or just follow instructions?

Listen for questions like:

• “What do you think?”

• “How could we try this another way?”

• “Why do you think that happened?”

These moments build confidence and curiosity — and help children learn to make thoughtful choices.

A school that values thinking grows independent learners.

5. How does the school build character and virtues?

Academics matter — but so do kindness, honesty, perseverance, and respect.

Ask:

• How do children learn to wait, share, and resolve conflict?

• Are virtues lived daily, or just written on the wall? Are they consciously brought through in daily interactions.

Character is shaped in everyday moments.

6. Do children have space to be themselves?

Every child is different — and that’s a good thing.

Look for classrooms that allow children to:

• move at their own pace

• express ideas freely

• feel safe being themselves

When children feel accepted and loved, confidence grows naturally.

7. How well does the school prepare children for the next stage?

Ask how the preschool supports transitions — especially to Primary One.

Not just academically, but emotionally and socially:

• Can children manage routines?

• Do they speak up when they need help?

• Are they comfortable with challenge?

True school readiness includes confidence, resilience, and values that guide behaviour.

8. Most importantly — how does the place make you feel?

Trust this one.

Do you feel welcomed?

Talk to the Principal. Listen to how she speaks about children, learning, and values.

Then look around.
Do her words match what you see in classrooms and how teachers interact with children?

Do teachers speak with warmth and care?

Can you imagine your child being known, valued, and guided here?

If your heart feels calm, that matters.

Final Thought

The “best” preschool isn’t the fanciest one.

It’s the one that helps your child grow into a curious learner, a confident individual, and a good human being — grounded in strong virtues and care for others.

And that?

Is worth taking the time to choose well for.
